Tourism

icoon-toerisme.jpgWith airplane tickets and all-in holidays becoming cheaper and cheaper, vacations abroad have become more accessible to people from Western European countries over the past 10 years. Most of these vacations are still taken within the European Union, but the number of trips to far-away countries is also rising. Especially developing countries with natural attractions such as exotic plant and animal species are becoming increasingly popular.

Only few people contemplate the effects of their trip on the host-country’s economic and ecological systems when choosing their destination. The term ‘Sustainable Tourism’ is not part of the regular travel agency’s vocabulary yet. SOMO has tried to change this by doing research and by organising activities with (local) partner-organisations.
