WTO

On 24 and 25 September the G-20 in Pittsburgh will once again call for the signing of a trade agreement within the World Trade Organization (WTO). SOMO argues in a letter to the newspaper NRC that binding commitments regarding financial services as specified in WTO negotiations are actually an obstacle to creating an effective solution to the current financial and economic crisis.

Many political leaders of the G-20 have been calling for the conclusion of the ‘Doha Round’ negotiations in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as a solution to the financial crisis. However, they seem unaware of the implications of liberalisation and deregulation as negotiated in the agreement, especially in the financial sector.

The collapse of the WTO talks at the end of July 2008 was not a surprise according to civil society organisations in the Netherlands.
