10th International Conference of NHRIs: Human Rights and Business: The Role of NHRIs
In a report presented to the Human Rights Council on 2 June 2009, the SRSG referred to National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) as potentially important avenues at the national level for remedy in cases of human rights allegations involving corporations. NHRIs may play a role in monitoring and reporting on human rights abuses in the business sector, facilitating legal reform, building capacity of government institutions as well as working with private sector enterprises / transnational corporations in the promotion and protection of human rights. NHRIs are uniquely placed to address the challenges raised under this SRSG framework, particularly at the national level where they can facilitate dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders from business, government and civil society.
