Untrustworthy trust offices
Wednesday, 7 June 2017 will go down in history as a unique day for the Dutch parliament. This was the day that the very first “parliamentary interrogation” took place in the House of Representatives.
This form – created last year – is a mini-version of the already established parliamentary inquiry. The House of Representatives could not have chosen a more urgent subject for the debut of this instrument: tax avoidance. More specifically, how trust offices enable companies and wealthy individuals to channel their money into tax havens via Dutch letterbox companies. The Panama Papers raised so many questions with the Dutch House of Representatives that they decided to question those involved about their role in tax avoidance.
