CETA: Shortcut for American multinationals
This factsheet is the first of two studies on how CETA strengthens the position of North American companies in the EU, thereby exposing European governments and taxpayers to potential claims.
In 2014, a study by the American NGO Public Citizen(opens in new window) already pointed out the fact that there are tens of thousands of American companies operating in the EU that also have a Canadian subsidiary. These companies can use CETA simply by adjusting their corporate structure and giving part of their Canadian subsidiary control over their European subsidiaries. This fact sheet builds on this study and shows how many, and which American companies could potentially use CETA, and in what ways.
