Revisiting the Past, Shaping the Future
Symposium on 14 October
This year, we celebrate 50 years of SOMO. The start of our work is deeply connected with the coup in Chile, also 50 years ago. Join us on 14 October for the Symposium: Revisiting the Past, Shaping the Future(opens in new window) , where we investigate lessons learned from President Allende and international solidarity movements.
Salvador Allende, the President of Chile from 1970 to 1973, delivered a historic speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 4 December 1972. In this speech, he addressed a multitude of global issues, primarily focusing on the inequities and challenges faced by the developing world. His speech remains a powerful reminder of the inequalities and power dynamics that persist in our world today.
Through a set of short round tables, this event aims to understand pivotal historical events and their influence on today’s global political environment. Within the framework of the anniversaries of SOMO and TNI, we will bridge key developments arising from the Chilean context of the 1970s and current political agendas.
We look at activism, migration, politics and solidarity to provide insights for crafting progressive political approaches to current global crises.
Speakers include Jorge Arrate (Allende’s Minister of State), Marieke Riethof (University of Liverpool), Shahd Hammouri (University of Kent), Mónica Barraza Maradiaga (Chile Despertó/ Diáspora Solidaria) and Jan de Kievid (Chile Committee Netherlands)
