Critical issues in the processed food industry
The processing of food and drinks and their exports has traditionally been seen by developing countries as a way to diversify out of low-priced, volatile and environmentally damaging commodity production and trade, and to get more added value and foreign exchange earnings. This report analyses particular obstacles for the development and trade of processed food from developing countries, and the contribution the processed food industry can make to poverty reduction and sustainable development in the current national and international context. The report does not focus on the many problematic issues of farmers and other suppliers to the processed food and drink industry.
