Bart-Jaap Verbeek
Researcher
Bart-Jaap specialises in the transnational governance of trade and investment and the impact on labour, environment, democracy, and human rights. In particular, he examines how trade and investment agreements enhance and protect transnational capital flows and what the implications are for equitable and sustainable economic development.
Before joining SOMO in 2018, Bart-Jaap worked at Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands), where he was involved in research and advocacy on the nexus between trade and climate change. In 2021, he received a PhD from the Radboud University in Nijmegen for his dissertation “The Making of the EU Investment Policy: A Critical Political Economy Perspective”.
Bart-Jaap holds an master in Latin American Studies from the University of Amsterdam and a master in Human Geography and Spatial Planning from Utrecht University.
