Maria Hengeveld is a corporate researcher for the Counter, SOMO’s pro bono investigations unit. Before joining SOMO, she investigated labour rights abuses in global supply chains as a journalist, publishing at The Nation and other publications.
In 2023, Maria received a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge. She also holds an MA in Human Rights from Columbia University in New York, where she studied as a Fulbright Fellow, and a Bachelor in Social Sciences from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
